An ATS-friendly CV helps recruitment software and people interpret your career information. It is a practical writing and formatting approach, not a hiring guarantee.
Sri Lankan candidates may encounter different application portals for local and overseas jobs. Instead of trying to defeat an unknown system, prepare a clear document and follow the instructions of the employer receiving it.
Understand the separate stages
An applicant tracking system can store applications and support recruitment workflows. Parsing is the extraction of information from a document into fields. Screening may also involve application questions or employer-defined criteria. These are related activities, but they are not the same decision.
Greenhouse documents cases where a resume remains attached even when automatic extraction fails. A parsing problem should therefore not be described as automatic rejection in every system. See Greenhouse's parsing guidance.
Build a document that is easy to interpret
Use familiar headings such as Professional Summary, Experience, Education and Skills. Associate each role clearly with an employer and dates. Keep essential contact details in the main document and avoid replacing meaningful text with icons.
Before submitting, select and copy the text into a plain document. Inspect the reading order and check that names, dates and important skills remain visible. This is a useful diagnostic, although it does not reproduce every employer's software.
Match terminology with real evidence
Read the vacancy for specific tools, responsibilities and qualifications. If it asks for bank reconciliation and you have performed that work, name it where the experience appears. Do not substitute vague wording such as “finance activities” when a precise, accurate term is available.
A skills section should summarise capabilities you can explain. Your experience and projects should show where you used them. Hidden text, copied advertisements and repeated keywords undermine the document's credibility.
Inspect the application, not just the file
After upload, check any fields the portal fills automatically. Correct errors where the application allows it. Answer eligibility questions honestly and attach the requested file type, rather than relying on a blanket rule about PDF or Word.
Keep a saved copy of the version submitted. If an employer contacts you later, you should know exactly which claims and examples they have seen.
A sensible next step
Review one target vacancy beside your CV. Mark missing evidence, unclear headings and unsupported claims separately. The ATS CV audit tool can support a review, while professional CV writing can help restructure content. Neither should be treated as proof that an employer will shortlist you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all employers use the same ATS rules?
No. Systems, configurations and hiring processes vary. Follow the specific application instructions and keep your document clear.
Does ATS-friendly mean removing all design?
No. Readable typography, spacing and restrained visual hierarchy can make a CV professional without relying on complicated layouts.
